Game AI is a lot different to "real AI" though, so it's hard to actually
be qualified in the field. Most of the stuff taught in universities seems
aimed at "classical" problems like chess and travelling salesman.
Which aren't much fun.

Suffice it to say, if you setup your textures right you can push a LOT of
geometry across an AGP bus. Curved surfaces also need to be done in
software, AFAIK no graphics card in the consumer space offers parametric
surfaces in hardware.
