How would you fix it, without breaking older Makefiles? Remember, ld
is still one of the stupider programs on the system.
It's not clear to me this is illogical, even today, btw. By
substituting a different math.h and libm.so, you could (eg) substitute
interval arithmetic (or other automatic error-estimation techniques)
or much higher precision reals, without changing the program.
