Richard, if the network admin doesn't know what the output of "route"
means, the network doesn't have a firewall, except by accident.
If you care about security, I really suggest you start reading some
HOWTOs. Start with Networking-Overview-HOWTO and Net-HOWTO, then go
on to some and eventually all of
DNS-HOWTO
Firewall-HOWTO
IP-Masquerade-HOWTO
IP-Masquerade
IPCHAINS-HOWTO
NET-3-HOWTO
NET3-4-HOWTO
Online-Troubleshooting-HOWTO
Securing-Domain-HOWTO
Security-HOWTO
Unix-and-Internet-Fundamentals-HOWTO
VPN-HOWTO
VPN-Masquerade-HOWTO
mini/Firewall-Piercing
mini/Home-Network-mini-HOWTO
mini/IP-Masquerade
mini/IP-Subnetworking
mini/VPN
It's not like there isn't enough information on this topic about. And
there are plenty of good books on the topic too.
