If both machines are on the same subnet (i.e., 192.168.0.*) and you still
can't ping them, then you had more than one problem in the first place.
Check firstly that the ip addresses of both the SuSE box and the Debian
box are 192.168.0.something. Then check the netmask is 255.255.255.0. If
those are both the case, you have a faulty network card(s) and / or wiring
problem too. Get rid of the hub, in the first instance. Connect both
computers using crossover cable - that will eliminate the possibility of a
problem in the hub. If that doesn't work, try a different crossover cable.
If it still doesn't work, it's one or more of the network cards involved.
