This is simply not true. Life is easier this way, for sure. But you
can set up any bizarre routing you want to by hand. At least, I can
on my Debian box. Have done so. (I found it a bit surprising, might
even be a bug.)
Not by Yast, of course. Nor do I know what evil implications it might
have for things more complicated than ping and traceroute, or for a
firewall. I do know that the packets go through.
