RE: [Sheflug] A potential Linux user needs help to get started
Matt
Re my previous message, the bit about DVD drivers is complete *****! Ignore
it.
.......... I would have thought that your only issue would be getting Linux
drivers for your DVD drive. I downloaded some for my drive but haven't
installed them yet - so at present under Linux it's just a normal CD
drive.............
After I sent it I started thinking that DVD drives don't need special
drivers to read DVD discs - that's what the drive does. So I stuck a DVD
disc in the drive under Linux to test it and it read the info fine. Don't
what I've downloaded for the drive. I just saw it on Creative Labs website a
while back and thought I'll have that - maybe it's some DVD utility, I'll
have to investigate sometime.
Sorry for any misunderstanding
John

Many thanks to everyone who responded so quickly to my queries. Several of
you have suggested that the shop in question don't know what they are
talking
about, and certainly that seems to be the case for linux systems. And they
are offering me such a good price, too :-( The main problems with the system
suggested would seem to now be the graphics card/chipset which is not listed
as linux compatible by SuSE and the hard disk which isn't mentioned either.
As far as I can see, the SB PCI128 sound card _is_ compatible, provided you
use ALSA (which I guess is supported by all Linux distributions??).
Sorry to ask further, but I don't understand the graphics card/chipset
issue.
Can anyone point me to a guide to this? What is the difference between the
card and the chipset? Is there a real choice of chipset?
Finally: can anyone recommend a local shop who CAN build a linux-compatible
system with reasonably high-spec components?
