Oh this chestnut - I bumped into this recently - from what I can work out,
Win9x boxes won't use WINS for resolving IP's with standard TCP/IP tools
(telnet, ftp, ping et al). NT does without a problem. This leads me to wonder
if 95's networking is borked.
A Win9x box is recgonised as what ever you want. It's networking is a crude
form of NT's. It can be either IP or NetBIOS based - or both.
What you really need, when its released, is a Linux box with dhcpd version 3
and BIND 8 on it - as dhcpd3 this will support dynamic DNS updates, and bind8
will happily receive them. This'll solve the problems :)
As for the current situation though - I'm not sure. I'm still thinking on
this problem for our network at work. Win9x is a git. OK for home (games!)
crap for the office (shite networking support). If I think of summat I'll let
ye know.
