Re: [Sheflug] Samba WINS client
Hello,
The machines are using TCP/IP and NetBIOS, but not NetBeui. The NetBIOS bit
is fine. I can see them if i do a smbclient //WHATEVER/SHARED.
The problem is that they seem to have no domain, or at least, not that I can
find. The NetAdmin doesn't know what domain they are in.
The only name these boxes have is the NetBIOS name which is exported for the
SMB clients/servers to use.
This is a pain when I try to do anything other than Samba mounts on them.
I can ping the NT and Linux boxes OK by doing:
ping <netbiosname>.<domain>
but the Win9x machines don''t like this, or
ping <netbiosname>
or
ping <netbiosname>.
I can ping them by IP, but as this is on a network with a DHCP server, I
can't set them up in resolv.conf as they are subject to change.
What I really need to know is this. How is a Win9x machine recognised on a
'real' network (not SMB). Or is this a microshaft
'use-our-stuff-or-it-wont-work' ploy (most likely)
Cheers
Craig
