One idea - I don't have my mp3's in a single partition - currently I've got
about 6 or 7 partitions dedicated to mp3's...why so many? Each partition is
650MB in size...ie, 1 CD's worth. It makes it very swish and easy to write
things out to CD when you know everything is under a single partition. :)

Of course, if you have no CD writer, then this is a moot idea :) Currently I
have about 15GB unassigned (I've a total of roughly 30GB split between a 3.2,
6.4, and a 20GB drive) for future expansion (should I need it).

I've created a hierachy under /usr/local, called archive ... so I've got:
/usr/local/archive/win For the odd windows bit
	/usr/local/archive/linux	Big linux hiearchy
	/usr/local/archive/linux/WindowMaker	Windowmaker stuff
	.
	.
	.
I throw all tarballs (plus the occasional RPM - I rarely use them...prefer
building from source where available) into /usr/local/archive/linux, or some
directory under there (kernel/, Wine/, WindowMaker/, xmms/ ...). This
hiearchy just lives on the /usr/local partition.

I carry out software package builds in /var/Build ... meaning a vageuly large
(but not too big) var partition, as once its installed and I know its
working, the source tree for the package can be blown away.

For speed, put them at the beginning of the disks. Whichever drive is the
faster is also the one you may want to put more swap on (think: fast swap,
less latency when it comes to swapping to disk).

Up to you :) I can never get it right...I've a 2GB root, 630MB /home, and a
2GB /usr/local. At the time I threw /usr on the root partition, and I'm
wondering if that really was a good idea. :) That's the base setup -
4.6GB...a tad less than the total disk space. I've got temporary storge under
/mnt, and a whole host or partiions under /home/chris/etc/music/mp3 (the
650MB ones). And still have space to spare. 3GB of disk has also gone to
Win95 (on a 2GB partition) and OpenBSD 2.6 (on a 1GB partition).

So the best thing to do is (my advice...so take with pinch of salt if you
want :) :
	- Evaluate what you've got at the mo, and allow for reasonable
		expansion
	- Decide on how you want to split the swap
	- *don't* assign all the disk space...unless you really know where
you want to put it. This allows you to expand and move
partitions as and when there is demand.

Chris...
