Two of the great security experts (Dan Farmer and Weitse Venema) have
an article in the September DDJ on "Computing Forensics".  They point
out that even on heavily used servers, 90% of the inodes are not
touched (not even read) in a typical month.  (Note that a server
typically does lots of ls -lRs, so probably much of that 10% is
directories that wouldn't get read except for the indexing!!)
