Are you taking this reading from the BIOS ?
We use seperate equipment with probes on the heatsink, I 'think' 
that the BIOS variety take their reading from the CPU instead.

The nice thing about Windows is that it doesn't just crash.
It displays a dialogue box and lets you click OK first.
