[Sheflug] Building kernel on one machine, using on another.

As long as the CPU family is the same, just build it.

The only thing is you need to be careful to

(1) set the architecture properly in make {,menu,x}config
(2) build in the right drivers (ditto)
(3) if you have modules (I don't really recommend that for a machine
dedicated to a specific purpose), you need to make sure they get
installed in the right places (which is tedious unless you use
Debian's make-kpkg; AFAIK none of the other distros have anything
like it, you have to hack RPM spec files)

Books can and have been written on this subject. Many. Go read some
HOWTOs (find /usr{,share/}doc -iname '*firewall*' -or -iname
'*ip*chain*').

Running a firewall to be fashionable isn't a great idea; it's just
going to interfere with your 'net access. (Interfering with
somebody's 'net access is what firewalls are all about, after all.)
Decide what your firewall is _supposed_ to do (every firewall is
different), read the docs, and if you can't figure out how to get it
to DWIW, post your best guess and we'll tell you what's wrong with it.

If it's purely to experiment, just install your firewall and start
tweaking.  Be prepared to lose some mail.  (~_^;;

But with your spec as written above, the answer is in four words:
Don't. Run. A. Firewall.
