Yup, I've used nmap, and nessus (pretty easy to get the latest version
going, old ones were a bugger).
Nessus uses nmap if you've got in installed for portscans, OS detection
etc, and looks for backdoors, trojans, etc and gives a report with a
number of suggestions to solve/reduce the risk.
For watching my system I use iplog (around v2.2.1 now - check
Freshmeat) and psionic.com do a nice set of programs. I use portsentry
to watch for wierd activity and automatic rejection of hosts, and
logcheck to scan logs and report any wierdness.
Still, I guess if someone *really* wanted to hack in, it wouldn't take
all that long.
