It might be that you just need to install the sound mixer software
that you would use under windows.  In the case of Linux this would be
either Gmix for Gnome or Kmix for the KDE.  That's gmix.rpm or
kmix.rpm from the Gnome or KDE sites.  You should have it on a CD. If
not then download it and install it.

After installation you should be able to turn up the volume a bit.
