Either encrypted passwords or use force win98 to send plaintext passwords.
Samba comes with information on its encryption, and a registry file (called
Win98_PlainPassword.reg) for the 98 box should you want to use plaintext.
For obvious reasons, encryption is preferred, but plain passwords are the
quickes (and easiest) to get working (stick reg file on disk, stick in
windows machime. double click on file, "Registry entries merged" dialog box,
and then reboot. Et voila).
