Whilst I don't fully understand it myself, it appears that some
processor/motherboard combinations - particularly AMD processors, can have
memory access timing problems which generate an error saying that gcc is
giving up because of 'Error 11'. This error also seems to be common when
using Red Hat distros. There is a web page about it at:
