Just tried again and it says...
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 4.85 seconds = 13.20 MB/sec
out of curiosity I tried it on my Pentium 1 based laptop with a
Toshiba hard drive. Don't know why there's a Toshiba HD in a Compaq
laptop. Reading that came back after 'HDPARM -c 1 -d 1 -k 1 /dev/hda'
....
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 20 seconds = 3.20 MB/sec
I suppose that this is consistent with a Pentium 1 chip and a laptop
? I've also found when I do 'HDPARM -c 1 -d 1 -k 1 /dev/hda' I get
....
setting 32-bit I/O support flag to 1
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
setting keep_settings to 1 (on)
I/O support = 1 (32-bit)
using_dma = 0 (off)
keepsettings = 1 (on)
So, how do I get DMA to work ? Do I belt the hard drive with a
suitably sized hammer ?
Thanks
Richard
