Well, you do have all the tools in the CD. As Barrie pointed
out, g++ will be your compiler, gdb the debugger and you can use one of
a myriad different editors. Emacs and vi are OK, but you might want to
start by using one of the "windowsy" friendly ones. I do use xemacs and
vim, depending on the link.
As for courses, again books on C++ or C abound. A good point to
start might be the C++ FAQ. I find it usually solves all my queries. A

Seeing how things are developing, I would wait and try compiling
some stable kernels (2.2.17, say), as you might find that the errors
aren't your own, but kernel bugs!
