Editors: vi, emacs
Holy wars have been started over this issue. I like emacs, although it is
less than intuitive.
(O'Reilly do books on both)

Compiler: g++ (part of gcc)
Typing "info gcc" at a prompt should tell you the basics.
If you get into more complex stuff you'll need to know make and maybe some
other things.
Start with the info page for gcc. Again O'Reilly do decent books on these
subjects (Blackwells on West Street have a good range).

FTP to ftp.uk.kernel.org
cd to /pub/linux/kernel/v2.4
ls
get the kernel you want (latest is 2.4.0-test9)

Kernels are not distro specific, although distros will ship packages of
kernels. Look on the slackware website to see if there is one available.

2.4 has better hardware support, notably USB, it also has bugfixes,
speedups and some other neat things like DRM (needed for XFree86 to do
hardware 3D).
