well....... i got lilo sorted but couldn't solve the problem with not being able to execute new programs that i introduced to the system!
i gave up and went in search of debian disks.....
got them installed them........ runs like a dream (well kind of:-)
a very stripped down debian system works great.... i even found a small window manager(60k).....
it now makes the perfect access terminal for the engineers.... thanks for all the advice and help.... as ever, it's been a great learning experiance even if it has taken up most of my evenings for the past week!
now i just need to see how many apps i can cram on to it without breaking it...
once i get mini-X i'll be well away........
