While the Windows clients print stuff to it in colour and
do so at a reasonable speed, the linux boxen take forever.

i've experienced the same with a directly connected printer.
it prints slower under linux than winXX at any given resolution from the
same machine.
quality is also poor compared with winXX (blastfamy!!! but true)

i'd be interested to know if there is a solution......
