Add this line:

(global-font-lock-mode 1)

including brackets, to the end of .emacs in your home directory.
You will get syntax highlighting for all recognised modes now. If it
doesn't recognise your file type, usually you do:

M-x (insert type here)-mode

eg. M-x java-mode

and it will change accordingly. And BTW, cperl-mode is much better than
perl-mode.

GNU/Emacs rules! Thought I ought to say that, should get a few responses
from xemacs fans ;-)

To be honest, the only reason I use GNU/Emacs is because it was already
installed, so I couldn't be bothered to swap!
