the linux equivelent is minicom.... comes with most distros or is readily
available from freshmeat web site. it's preconfigured to suit most standard
modems (ps com1 is equivelant to /dev/ttyS0 in linux speak)

you don't kill hardware (unless you take a hammer to it:-) you kill
applications running on it...
to list the processes, type ps -A at the 'command prompt' it will list all
running processes..... you can select the process you want to kill/terminate
and issue "kill xxx" where xxx is the PID of the process.

using minicom, issue the modem reset command something along the lines of
+++ATM0 (although minicom does offer to do this through the menus)
