take your point about the incomming packets :-) (not thinking!)

as for the DNS and SMB, well i've got very little running on the machine

sendmail
X
xfs
and some kde servers!
squid
no DNS or file servers

the running processes are very similar to the LM7.1 setup i used to have
running successfully.....

is there anyway of tracing the sorce of the packets (can i look inside the
packet for possible ID headers from the sending app)
or is it a case of going round killing proccesses until it stops!

or SMB
name server probes/requests)?
