About the same number of serious bugs are fixed from 2.95.2 to 2.96.
The C++ support in 2.95.2 blows. If you write a lot of C++ you will notice
this. 2.96 is better, and the newer 2.96 RPMS are actually rather good.
It's a programmer decision, not a political one, and has seen RedHat come
off worse, but without that release there would be a lot less bugfixes in
3.0 (a bit like 2.95.1 which had very little real world use, and was a bit
of a disaster bug-wise) I know I have submitted one (now fixed) bug report
that may otherwise not have made it.

Because it's "Linus blessed". I've been compiling kernels with 2.96 for
months and never had a problem. (Yes, I am aware problems have been
reported in some drivers, but not any I use. Heh)
