[Sheflug] Help - CDROM

Hi,

I'm in bother again!! ;o{

I've just rebuilt a machine on which I've put Mandrake 7.2 - all very
appealing to the kids now!! I wouldn't recommend it to any of our Debian
stalwarts as it will probably give them apoplexy but its certainly going the
right way to steal Mr Gates' thunder!

Anyway, try as I might, I cannot get the damn thing to read the CDROM now.
The drive is a bog standard ATAPI (Matshita CR 585) which has been working
fine on the previous linux box (Mandrake 7.1) and the system seems to have
decided its /dev/hdc and tells me that it has 'supermounted' it as
/dev/cdrom, however, when I try to read its contents, I am told it is a
'locked directory' to which I have no access. I am logged in as root and the
permissions on /dev/cdrom (which points to /dev/hdc) are all set so it
should be wide open. Any ideas anyone?? Incidentally, I installed the
Mandrake software using this same drive - it hasn't been touched since!

Also, as far as I can tell from the documentation I have seen, you can still
only use a SCSI CD writer on linux - is this correct or could I set up a
spare HP 7200 IDE drive on this system?

Thanks.

Ian
