[Sheflug] Blasted X Server again!

Am I stupid, or is everything just conspiring against me this week?

I'm attempting to run the startx command as a non-root user (root works
OK), and the server is give the following error:

[oracle@flux oracle]$ startx -- :1

Fatal server error:
Cannot open log file "/var/log/XFree86.1.log"

When reporting a problem related to a server crash, please send
the full server output, not just the last messages.
This can be found in the log file "/var/log/XFree86.1.log".
Please reports problems to xfree86 [at] xfree86.org.

Now, looking at the log file the last line is:

AUDIT: Sun Dec 24 16:53:28 2000: 1995 X: client 5 rejected from local
host

I ran the startx command above at 1712hrs, I had emacs open earlier, but
why is the server complaining it can't open the log file? It's managed
OK for the past few weeks, and I'm clever enough to know not to play
with the XServer when it's working :-)

I can get individual programs run by a user to connect to my XServer
and display the window, but I can't get a new server started...

This behaviour is the same for the other 2 users I've tried, and I
don't know where to start.

 Baz.
