Thanks, Will. rpm -Uvh --force lpr<package-number> did it nicely.

Maybe I did delete it myself.  Was very late at night.  But daemon died
before I started messing about so it wasn't all me.

[wonders: am I afraid of machine?  no, not machine, just the amount of work
 it can generate at the drop of a hat.  THAT scares me.]

[I'm running a RH clone called Gentus, only Linux I've been able to install.]
