Well, thanks everyone.

I had noticed that a number of agencies seem to have an overinflated
opinion of their position, and how much money they make (which I'm
sure they do).

I'm always in amazement how an industry, whatever it might be, can
survive if the companies are not prepared to invest in staff/training.

The average time with one employer, as Alex mentioned, might be 2
years - there must be a reason for that.

I have so far only seen one company that is prepared to take on people
with little or no experience.
If you can complete their problem sets - identical to an module in
MIT's CS degree - then you're inline for consideration.

They also give away training material and run free courses - not bad
at all. Of course - this is their recruitment process - so they save
paying agencies...

I think I'm going to have to figure out who to speak to. There aren't
a great deal of technically based jobs advertised in the local papers
(a little strange considering I'm living in the M4 corridor).

Oh, well, I guess I'll have to find a no-brainer job until I can track
something interesting down - but even that side of the job market is
quiet at the moment :-(

Cheers,

Baz
