Re: [Sheflug] Fw: failure notice

I'm interested in where everyone thinks the UK Linux market is at the
moment:
Is it in server software?
Do bosses take Linux seriously - do they trust it to run their business?
Is it in home use?
Is it still mostly in LUGs and university computer centres?

How do we convince both business and home users to try (and then trust)
linux?
Simplify the offering: One window manager, one mail server, one web
server... all bundled up with consultancy and installation support for a
fixed price?

Or do we take the more round about root of embedded Linux devices like the
'Tivo' - once everyone has a 'powered by Linux' badge on the front of their
digital video recorder (etc) do they come to believe in the reliability and
power of Linux?

Speaking as a relative newbie I am intentionally using only one window
manager, mail client etc - until I get used to where everything is - I like
the fact that I have a choice but I'll start off with the 'defacto standard'
stuff first until I've built up my 'Linux Confidence' - and I'm a computer
scientist(on paper) would your average 'casual user' run a mile when
presented with four WMs at login time? Shouldn't we limit their exposure to
the richness of Linux until they can handle it?

Cheers
Rob

great desktop OS. Office, DUN, browser, easy-to-use GUI, easy install, one
CD. Marvellous. SuSE personal: 3 disks of everything you never wanted. Fine
for those who like EVERYTHING on their machines, but for simple desktop use,
I use Debian. Complete system with Tex, Octave, GIMP, etc in less than
600Mb? Mmmmm...
