It's a display format, like Postscript (yes, you can modify PS more
easily, but it's not fun).
PDF is good for point and drool purposes. It also stops people asking for
CVs in f**king MS Word format. ("That Word 97 or Word 2000 format you
have? And what fonts do you have installed etc.") It's easier to write a
simple viewer than it is for PS, it supports hyperlinks, it has
encryption. It's reasonably open. It's not a bad thing, really. The lack
of software that generates good PDFs and the poor quality of Acrobat
Reader are not good things...
