I was looking at the network card when that occurred to me.  So, might
try another network card.

Started to think that way when I found that a Realtek 8029 card
doesn't like Linux.  Then I found that 8129 and 8139 were okay.  So,
I'll try a different network card first and then get back to the
modem.

Maplin Electronics are just along the street from me.  Until a few
weeks ago they sold 8129 cards.  Now they sell 8029 cards.  I think a
salesman has offloaded something onto them.
