Re: [Sheflug] Linux searching
Hi All,
Thanks for all of your input into our NIS/LDAP planning. We're still
figuring exactly how to organise the network, but meanwhile we have a
much more pressing issue - four of our new client machines have gone
down!
In a fit of enthusiasm we installed four Mandrake 7.2 boxes (that's
the plain English term for boxen) for M*cr*s*ft-addicted users to
work on. And at first they looked great! They've got a wide range of
Apps on a base install, including late versions of Netscape, Gimp, a
GUI FTP client, a suspiciously MS-like office suite, flock of editors
that even newbies can understand - pretty much everything we need
pre-installed, which is potentially a great timesaver.
However, when they're running KDE they swerve off course (i.e. don't
actually crash, but...) with an "Interprocess Communication Error".
What this means is that you can't use the GUI to open your home
directory (in fact, you can't open any directory!) and many Apps
won't run. (I suspect the ones that require access to config files in
the /home/username directory, which is NFS mounted, are the problem).
In other words, the boxes become completely useless!
The problem only seems to be evident in KDE, not in Gnome. However,
because it's the most W*nd*ws-like (sorry about my language) it's the
Desktop we prefer (I personally like IceWM, but that's another
story). Now the point is, the error doesn't necessarily make itself
evident straight away. The machines can be running for a few minutes
or a few hours before we get this message.
The error message says "dcopserver error - check dcopserver is
running". I've checked. It is running. Is this a known issue with
Mandrake 7.2 or KDE? Any ideas what the problem might be - or even a
solution? At the moment the "just use Gnome" workaround is the best
we have.
Cheers,
James
