Try looking in ~/.xsession-errors if you can, there may be something in
there. Also examine ~/.kde/socket-host.domain. It should be a symlink to a
socket in /tmp.
I believe Mandrake 8.0 has been in beta for a while so you could test out
an upgrade to that (although I wouldn't wish that particular distro on my
worst enemy - no, not even a Windows user).
