[Sheflug] mandrake8.0

hi all,

well the mamoth download is complete and i've got the latest mandrake8.0
installed.

i know most of you prefer suse/debian distro's but i hope you don't mind my
comments on the latest offering from mandrake.

the installer is one of the biggest changes that i have noticed. very glitzy
and comprehensive. still easy to use (although 7.2 was more straight forward
when using 'expert mode'). there is a great selection of software and
supported hardware. all my harware was identified correctly first time.
strangly though (same as 7.2) there is no sound config tool :-(

the glitz continues through the boot sequence with a fancy graphical boot
sequence (that will probably make most of you cringe but it does look nice!
;-)

kde2.1 is looking good although showing it bloat (slower to draw on screen)

there is the usual choice of software athough, there is an unusual array of
games!

i definitely think the modern linux distro's are aimed at the more upto date
pc as my once top of the range pII 300 with 128mb ram is decidedly slugish
now (much more so than windows!)

the biggest disapointment for me is that there is still no automatic hard
drive optimizations and no automatic config for demand dialing (two areas
that are extremly straight forward once you have succeeded once but a pain in
the butt the first time you try....

well that's it for now...... i'm off to reconfigure my drives and get pppd
sorted out and see if can get the snapiness back and ...................

supose this is progress though:-(

thanks,
Ross
