i had a similar problem when i first installed mandrake 7.2..... turned
out to be a similar option to the one you have found in xmms but in the
sound server config. are you using the oss driver or the artsd (alsa)
sound server? i have never had any probs with oss but alsa needed some
tweaks. through the kde control centre, select the sound server options.
you will find a real time priority setting for the arts server. select
this and all should be sorted (sorry, i only know gui's never have liked
writting, typing or talking a great deal!)
