OSS ... stock kernel, no external drivers. Soundcard is an ISA AWE 64 
Value (or 32 Value ... can't remember ... it's a 4 year old card :)

Bad assumption that I use KDE...I don't (or Gnome for that matter) as for 
the number of apps I'd use for each aren't enough to justify to me 
plonking on silly megabytes of libraries :) I'm a Windowmaker person.

Bear in mind, this did not happen with XFree 3.3.x - it's only Xfree 
4.0.x it's become an issue. I don't know what version of XFree Mandrake 
comes with.

An interesting side note is that I also have glibc 2.2.2 ... now whether 
this could also be a factor (old machine was glibc 2.1.<summat>). 
Apparently XFree 4.0 needs glibc 2.2.x, but I've not confirmed this - 
just a couple of things I've read whilst trying to locate the source of 
this problem.
