I do  but obviously not at that time.  
So when I set up the parameters for ifconfig BEFORE doing a dhclient I
should use IP 0.0.0.0 subnet 0.0.0.0 and leave the gw bit off

Then when the machine boots I get errors at boot up -cannot assign address.

dhclient works OK   everything goes fine,

Alternatively

If I give the card an address like 172.19.1.1/16 no errors at boot up as
dhclient works fine but at shutdown I get errors saying there are errors
removing route to 172.19.1.1/16 or something like that.  

As everything seems ok all this stuff is cosmetic but ...
