This is exactly what I am in the process of doing. I am halfway through
getting 2.4.4, which I will use from scratch.
I am going to leave 2.2.18 in /usr/src/linux, and symlink it to
/usr/include/linux, and keep 2.4.4 in my home directory, so I can mess about
logged in as me.
I don't trust RPMs...
