[Sheflug] Mandrake 8 Annoyance

Hey,

I just got Mandrake 8. Previously I was using Slackware 7.1. I decided to get
this because it has got all the new features (X4 KDE 2.1 Kernel 2.4.3) and I
couldn't be bothered to upgrade Slack (that's if it was easy enough to do). I
like this distro a lot, I used to use 7.2 but I have a huge problem with it.
Because it's an automated distro I can't seem to install anything from a
tarball. It's really anoying. RPM's work fine because KPackage picks it up
and install's it no problem. But when I try and install a tarball it always
comes up and says it can't find libraries or something. It doesn't seem to
work as standard. A basic error I get is listed below, I was trying to
install Xine (su'd to root and typed ./configure)...

loading cache ./config.cache within ltconfig
ltconfig: you must specify a host type if you use `--no-verify'
Try `ltconfig --help' for more information.
configure: error: libtool configure failed

That's what I got. Now I know that it must be install because when I try and
install the Xine RPM (same version) I have no problem. I'm guessing
everything must be held in a different location, not standard.

Another thing, when I try and install VMWare and run the config... The
default C header files for the kernel are in /usr/src/linux/include on
Slackware and normal distros but on here they're in /usr/include/linux. Even
after I sorted this I carried on with the config I get another error (unable
to build the vmon module). It was dead simple in Slackware, no problems. Why
can't Mandrake use standards? I want to keep this distro but if I can't
install anything (I don't wanna always download RPMs) then I can't see any
other option. Can someone please help me get this back up to normal.

Thanks a lot!

Darrell
