Basically, a dist-upgrade attempts to retain the same functionality on the
system, working out what packages will do that. A testimonial: it's never
screwed up for me.

You'd need to install the appropriate kernel package from Spud, then
dist-upgrade from there. You can't go to a 2.4 off the dist-upgrade - you'd
need to apt-get install kernel-image-2.4.x (for 0 <=x < 5).  If you want to
hit 2.4 direct and not download ki22, copy your 2.2 kernel image to
somewhere else, uninstall ki22, then copy the image back (lilo after).
That'll give you a kernel to boot off until you install ki24.

It'll download a metric arseload as it is - it's effectively a complete
install over a modem. There are very few (if any) packages unchanged.

You won't get it unless the equivalent is already installed. I think the
snapshot has the package name "gcc30" or something. Unless you've got a
gcc30 package already installed, it won't put another on. I don't think
there was a gcc30 package in spud, so you should be safe.

Nope. I don't do Gnome.

I've got a partial mirror of unstable/testing packages if you wanted a burn
of those - about a gig and a half. Might save you some hassle, though I'm
not entirely sure how you'd actually make it work...

You might like to look a little closer to home - postage from here to you is
likely to be a bit costly.
