I'd say your .profile would be the best place [or .bash_profile or .login 
or <insert startup script for your shell here>], or if you want to change 
it globally plonk it in /etc/profile [different for csh/tcsh and other 
shells].

Cause problems? Can't see why - 40MB isn't enough to create a CD image for 
starters, so unless Redhat's doing something iffy (I don't use it so can't 
look myself) it should be fine.
