Re: [Sheflug] 2.4.4
I too have done a nice upgrade from 2.2.18 to 2.4.4 using sources from
kernel.org. All I can say is 'wow!'
Set some options using menuconfig, build it, add it to lilo... 30 mins and
ALL my hardware was back up! Sound, network, nvidia horrible graphics
card. Marvellous.
I tried the 2.4.2 which comes with SuSE, but it seemed like at least two
things stopped working (usually network, which is strange because it is a
bog standard 3com 3c509, and sound, which is a bog standard Soundblaster
AWE64)
Also, the PNP support is amazing, as long as you have NO legacy cards. I
loaded the sound before the network modules, and the network refused to
work. I could have booted DOS to change the settings, but no. In fact, I
may try it in PNP mode?
Anyway, I digress... I had no sb stuff in modules.conf, btw, and all I did
was:
modprobe 3c509
modprobe sb
modprobe awe_wave
and it -ALL- worked! It even figured out that the AWE lies about its
required resources (buggy chipset) and compensated. Top stuff.
Excuse if anyone is thinking 'yeah, so, mines been doing this for x
years', but I have never installed an ISA sound card, PNP or not, without
having to specify ANY parameters at all. And, if you remove and reload the
driver after modifying something, it selects different resources. This is
the M$ holy grail, which they have repeatedly missed since PNP's debut in
Win95, right up to 2000.
Just one long ramble from an old (young) fool
