Try: export DISPLAY="<ipaddress>:0.0"

The :0.0 is important - it defines the server and screen to run on - on 
most boxes, the first server on the first screen. The second server, first 
screen would be :1.0. Though usually you can omit the screen number and 
just have the server specifier - ie, :0.0 == :0, :1.0 == :1 etc ...

Without the specifier it doesn't know what to connect to on your system.
