If you're not getting errors on boot-up, it's because it's using
/boot/System.map-2.4.4 or something similar - I would rather bet against
the chance of your system map not having changed :)
Look in the souce code for a sprintf(..., "%s-%s", ..), and realise why your
machine works. ln -s'ing System.map doesn't achieve much unless you're doing
some wierd compiling.
