Re: [Sheflug] Re:Euro Parliament recommends open source
Highly interesting subject of debate
As we all know, Billy G himself came to see old Tony Blair at his house in London, to discuss, persuade or force Blair into putting Bills OS on all the computers in English schools and just about everywhere Somehow, Tony was persuaded maybe by having his pockets lined, maybe with threats (involving money and trade -oor Tony's eyes light up when he sees
£ or $ signs, and he totally understands the importance of trade in the growth of the capitalist economy), or maybe windoze was the only option presented to him on a plate.
Recently, I read (New Statesman) that Exxon Mobil (Esso in the UK, more than equivalent to MS in the oil world) were opposing the new oil tax of 10$ per barrel. The methods they were using involve spending vast amounts of money on telling people that this tax that would stifle progress and slow economies (propaganda). This lobbying may have had some
effect in the Eastern world, China and Asia, but apparently the American company tried similar behaviour Europe, and the individual concerned was laughed out and promptly resigned.
I also read the New Scientist article below. The evidence suggests to me that Europe may be a little sceptical about the widespread use of MS software. Good old Europe! I think I may write to my MP and see what infomation he can trawl on the matter.
The principle works with not only computer software but all aspects of knowledge and information sharing - open source promotes development, understanding and advancement, whereas withholding information and commercial sensetivity restricts development and promotes mistrust and animosity - with me at least, but I'd be interested if anyone had any
examples to the contrary.

In fact, I helped RMS to understand that either free software or open source software was something that needed to be a part of the EU project. He also helped myself to understand that.

There are also many other issues or sub-issues that are involved with this kinda thing that I'm sure I don't understand myself.
