Actually, I bet your browser unziped it on the way down. Some web sites
use gzip compression transparently to transmit stuff. I've had occasions
were I've downloaded a tag.gz file, only to find by the time it gets to
me it's just a tar file (still with the gz extension). My browser unziped
it for me.
