Right. I have discovered it's dastardly secret. The .tar.gz file was not,
in fact, gzipped, but was a plain tar.
I just gzipped it and it reduced to a mere 1.3MB. This equates to 4KB/s
transfer rate. Much more realistic.
Still, it proves that compression technology can be good enough to squeeze
a large, highly compressible file down sufficiently to make it as though
you compressed it manually?
Anyway. Mystery solved. Shame really. I would have liked that sort of
speed of my modem ;)
