Having seen no reference to LiLo during the install process, I presume c).

That's where the problem lies - there /is/ no LiLo prompt - certainly not one
that allows me to type a command.

I've just been thro' the install process again, and this time chosen the
textual option.

Success!

It has kindly given me a boot option, so I can at least boot into Linux.
Hooray!

 . . but no X :-(
 
 I've probably configured the video card wrongly. Not surprising - it's an
ancient Cirrus thing a rescued from the skip! A better one should be
available to me next week. In the meantime, I would highly appreciate a
pointer to configuring the video-card from the command line!
