[Sheflug] Getting XEmacs/VM (+other MUAS) to use remote mailserver

Hi All.

Until I've had a Qmail server running on my desktop machine (which I always
mess
about with).

I'm tired of reconfig'ing an MTA every time I mess up my desktop, so I've
installed QMail onto a 486, running as quark.localdomain (192.168.0.4)

I can't get VM to connect straight to the mailserver to send mail out.

Here are the relevant bits of my .xemacs/custom.el:

 '(smtpmail-smtp-server "quark.localdomain")
 '(smtpmail-smtp-service 25)
 '(toolbar-mail-reader (quote vm))
 '(mail-use-rfc822 t)
 '(smtpmail-default-smtp-server "quark.localdomain")

I can send email from the mailserver by telnet'ing to port 25 and using a few
SMTP commands OK, but I can't get VM to do it.

How to I get "mail", "pine" etc to use a remote MTA?

Help! :-)

Baz.
